Cabernet Franc 'Mordese' Vallepicciola 2021
"Mordese" is a Tuscan red wine made from Cabernet Franc grapes, aged in barriques for 14-16 months. Evolved notes of spirited black cherry, ripe plum, sweet spices, balsamic hints and touches of cocoa powder intertwine on a strong, intense and structured body, with a well-sculpted tannin
The Cabernet Franc “Mordese” from the Vallepicciola winery is a Tuscan red produced with one of the most famous international grape varieties in the world. Cabernet Franc is the oldest variety in the Bordeaux area, the true progenitor of the region's grapes and the father of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenère. In recent years, it has been gaining notoriety also thanks to the terroir of Tuscany, which has proven particularly suitable for its needs, both from a climatic and soil perspective. The grapes reach full ripeness and vinified in purity, it produces wines with an elegant profile, delicately fruity, with interesting notes of Mediterranean scrub and medicinal herbs.
The red “Mordese” is a pure Cabernet Franc that originates in the heart of Chianti, in the wonderful hilly area near the small village of Castelnuovo Berardenga, a few kilometers from Siena. The Vallepicciola estate, founded in 1980 with a few hectares, now extends over a total area of 265 hectares, of which about a third is planted with vines. In addition to Sangiovese, numerous international varieties are cultivated: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Nero, Petit Verdot, and Chardonnay. The vineyards are located at an altitude of about 350-400 meters above sea level, on soils of rather heterogeneous composition, with the presence of marls, tuff, clays, sandstones, and sands. Cabernet Franc is cultivated in a parcel characterized by medium-textured soils, calcareous-clay, very rich in galestro and alberese, which allow for excellent drainage and enable the vine to find a natural productive and vegetative balance.
The Cabernet Franc “Mordese” from Vallepicciola is produced with fermentation in steel at controlled temperature, with a maceration on the skins of about three weeks. The wine matures in French oak barrels for 14-16 months and completes the aging with a few months in bottle. It presents itself with an intense and bright ruby red color. The aromas recall small dark berry fruits, sour cherries, dark chocolate, roasting notes, the aromas of aromatic herbs from the Mediterranean scrub, balsamic and menthol sensations. The sip is very elegant, with complex and multifaceted aromas, a deep tannic texture, and a pleasantly refreshing finish.
